The Plan for the Revitalization of Main Street is a dynamic blueprint
for the rebirth of the Main Street area. The Plan includes a grassroots
Ten-Year Community Plan, with a full accountability schedule,
prepared by Center City Neighborhood Development Corporation and
the Main Street Business & Professional Association.
In the spring of 1999, residents and business people embarked
on an existing and meaningful process to develop a plan for Main
Street. Surveys were mailed to more than 3,000 residents in Western
New York. More than 130 people attended five community forums
to articulate their ideas - their vision for Main Street. Hundreds
of ideas were gathered and recorded into a workable document.
From the ideas presented, categories emerged and a plan began
to take shape. The Strategic Planning Committee for the Main Street
Business & Professional Association worked with representatives
from Center City Neighborhood Development Corporation to compile
and analyze the data and to develop an accountability schedule.
Each activity is designed to implement seven key goals:
§ Increase Commercial Development
§ Create Economic Opportunities
§ Incorporate History
§ Celebrate Architecture
§ Ensure Cultural Diversity
§ Enhance the Quality of Life
§ Improve the Surrounding Neighborhoods
Using the Ten-Year Community Plan, the Parsons Transportation
Group and Allee, King, Rosen & Fleming conducted interviews
and analyzed data resulting in a streetscape plan, a thorough
market study, and recommended strategies.
The final Plan for the Revitalization of Main Street won top
honors at the Western New York sector of the American Planning
Association and went on to win similar honors at the New York
State level from the A.P.A..
