An Award Winning Plan for
Main Street
The
Plan for the Revitalization of the Main Street Business
District issued in the fall of 2001, is a dynamic
blueprint for the rebirth of the Main Street area. The plan contains
streetscape designs for the Main Street area, a marketing study
and strategic recommendations. Incorporated into this plan is
the Main Street Business & Professional Association's grassroots
Ten-Year Community Plan.
In
the spring of 1999, residents and business people embarked on
a process to develop a plan for Main Street. Surveys were mailed
to more than 3,000 residents in Western New York. More than 130
people attended five community forums to articulate their ideas
- their vision for Main Street. Hundreds of ideas were
recorded, compiled and catagorized and seven
key goals were
identified. The Ten Year Community Plan
was created. The plan, prepared by the Main Street Business &
Professional Association and in partnership with Center City Neighborhood
Development Corporation, also included an implementation schedule.
Using
the Ten-Year Community Plan, the Parsons Transportation Group
and Allee, King, Rosen & Fleming conducted interviews and
analyzed data and conducted market research. The final product,
A Plan
for the Revitalization of the Main Street Business District won
top honors at the Western New York sector of the American Planning
Association and went on to win similar honors at the New York
State level from the A.P.A..
